Opportunities for Professional members

Professional members --if you'd like to get more involved here are some ways you can help us foster scientific discovery and understanding in Kentucky!

Events:

Kentucky Junior Academy of Science Each April - faculty serve as judges for middle and HS scientists' talks at Kentucky State University, either morning or afternoon. Any members are also always welcome to sit in on the KAS Governing board meeting from 1-3 that day at KSU.  In the weeks leading up to the event, members can log in and click on “proposal review” in the Member Menu to sign up.

KAS Annual Meeting  each November - faculty serve as judges for talks and posters

Youth Science Summits, coordinated by Kentucky Science Center - several around the state  each year; time & location varies. Scientists present lab sessions and help with roundtable-style mentoring sessions.

Science Celebrations - second Friday & Saturday of each month at the Science Center in Louisville. Often on a theme- scientists present walk up table demos and each event features a talk aimed at a general audience

(We also seek speakers for other emerging event opportunities throughout the year-- Science Speakers Bureau members will be first contacts for these events)

Ongoing Service opportunities:

Science Speakers Bureau - graduate & professional members who are interested in public engagement work can sign up. We get requests from around the state from teachers, librarians, summer camps, conference organizers, Extension , etc. Current members can log in and edit their profile, & set their audience preferences to sign up for this.

Section leadership - Section leaders play a role in organizing talks and poster sessions for the Annual meeting and coordinating judging for student competitions. They also serve as liaisons to the Governing Board on behalf of their section.  Section leaders are elected each year by section members at the Annual Meeting.

Committee service - Members may sign up in the Member Menu after logging in
  • Science Education & Advocacy  follows legislation during the Ky legislative season, and works to connect with teachers & support science education(esp K12) in other ways throughout the year
  • Public Engagement - works to make science more visible to the general public & improve science literacy
  • Grants & Awards -  Members of this review grant proposals submitted each year in November an/or review candidates for our annual Science Education & Outreach award

KAS Governing Board service
Most board members serve 4 year terms. We’re always looking for more candidates from our smaller schools, who seem to be generally under-represented on the KAS Governing Board. Nominations are collected each September for the October ballot.
