Summer has started and vaccination continues!

Summer has began and Fourth of July was as close to normal for some. As of the beginning of this month, about ~43% of the Commonwealth have been fully vaccinated, and close to 50% have received at least one dose. As we enjoy the remaining days of summer, please continue to observe safety measures as necessary. Per CDC guidelines, those fully vaccinated can participate in indoor/outdoor activities without masks. Let's keep it up, Team Kentucky!

Remember to get your second shot! If required, do not forget to schedule the second shot to take full advantage of the vaccine. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require a second shot, while J&J is a single-shot. Visit the Team Kentucky COVID-19 resources for vaccination information as well as in-state updates. Meanwhile, if you are interested in learning more about the virus and its variants, visit the CDC Variant Surveillance page.

500QS Campaign

500QS is a visibility campaign for LGBTQ+ people and their allies working in STEM and STEM-supporting jobs. The website features stories and voices from community members and allies to provide the next STEM generation role models. Visit their website to know more about the campaign and to contribute your voice and story.

In professional and academic environments, members of the LGBTQ+ community face higher rates of exclusion, harassment, assault at higher rates than straight colleagues. In 28 states, they can also still be legally discriminated against by employers. This visibility campaign is one way to contribute to change. Find out more from the resources page.

Summer Science Activities for Families

Summer is upon us! As we all enjoy the rest of summer, we have compiled some resources for family-friendly science activities that everyone can enjoy. Of course, social distancing and mask-wearing still encouraged!

The National Girls' Collaborative Project's The Connectory features a range of STEAM opportunities for K-12 youth. Click here to learn more.

Summer camps will also be hosted by the Kentucky Science Center and the Lexington Living Arts and Science Center. Check out the programs and camps for various age groups organized by KSC by clicking here. Meanwhile, you can click here to register for LASC summer camps.

SciStarter has Citizen Science projects for anyone interested to contribute. After all, there is a scientist in all of us! Finally, we have our own KAS Resources for Teachers that has some great activities students and families can do over summer vacation.

Have fun, explore, and stay safe!

#Fundscience

KAS is calling on our elected officials in Washington to support robust R&D budgets. The Endless Frontier Act and the NSF for the Future Act are moving through the Senate with a 20% EPSCoR carve-out for NSF and NASA and a boost in funding for rural STEM Education, among other initiatives. Kentucky is an EPSCoR state and would benefit from increased research funding if this were to pass.

Let your voice be heard by contacting our Kentucky Senators. You can find their information by following this link: Contact Kentucky Senators, and by tagging them on Twitter and other social media. You can also write to your representatives by taking action with the Local Science Engagement Network
