Education

Applications to participate in the 3rd year of BIO-RETS: Urban Ecology Research and Environmental Justice are now open

Are you a high school biology teacher (or science teacher that teaches environmental science concepts)? Are you looking for an energizing professional learning experience this summer? Would you like to learn more about urban ecological research while working with an actual biologist as an apprentice in a professional working environment? Are you curious about ways to infuse your curriculum with immediately relevant environmental justice issues?
The University of Louisville is accepting applications for a paid fellowship (roughly $9,000) funded by the National Science Foundation that begins in June 2026.  Deadline is February 20, 2026)
Additional information about the project can be found via the project website.

Policy

KAS Science Policy Training returns in 2026

This free training is open to KAS members at any point in your career, whether you're a student, graduate, or professional. This series offers background in how policy is made at the State level, and offers practical training and experience in researching and communicating scientific information to policymakers and to the public.
Participants will come away with knowledge about the legislative system in Kentucky, and science-related issues moving through the legislature. Participants will also develop skills in building relationships with legislators and translating relevant scientific research for use in public policy. At the end of the series, Participants will get to practice their skills in a visit with legislators at the state capitol. Participants who complete all sessions will receive a “Kentucky Science Policy” certificate and be well-equipped to participate in science policy advising.

Fridays at 12 noon ET
January 23, 30
February 6,13, 20
Capitol visit Friday February 27
Register here for individual sessions or the whole series

KAS Exploring a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship program

Science and technology policy fellowships place professional STEM graduate degree-holders in state government to provide nonpartisan scientific expertise to support policymakers in developing evidence-based legislation. These positions are generally held for 1 or 2 years and allow scientists to gain public policy experience, address complex issues like technology regulation and public health, and serve as a vital link between scientific research and state policy. At the federal level, AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF) serve Congress and federal agencies. Sixteen states have similar fellowships, including Indiana, West Virginia, and Missouri. Kentucky has the opportunity to secure new matching funds to launch a science policy fellowship. To learn more, contact Austin McMasters, policy@kyscience.org

Training opportunity: National Science Policy Network

NSPN is offering the Ultimate Science Policy Career Bundle, available through December 31.
The stakes are high, and the clock is ticking. It’s time for scientists to enter the policy arena and fight for evidence-based policies that help people thrive.

Designed with the NSPN community in mind, this bundle is the fastest and most affordable way to build a strong science policy foundation that opens doors and accelerates your impact in 2026 and beyond. Whether you’re stepping into policy for the first time or looking to level up your engagement, there is no better moment to invest in your professional growth!

Tell NSF what you think about Workforce Development

The National Science Foundation is seeking community input on its recently published Roadmap for Workforce Development: Building Pathways and Innovations for the Critical and Emerging Technology Workforce, which “aims to offer an actionable agenda to invigorate and empower the ambition of all Americans to join the workforce in critical and emerging technology sectors.” Members of the public can submit feedback via web form, email or postal mail through January 15, 2026

Science Policy Committee Invites your Participation!

The Science Policy committee will meet Wednesday, December 10 at 12:30pm ET on Zoom. The next meeting will be January 14. All are welcome! Email Science Policy Specialist Austin McMasters (policy@kyscience.org) for the zoom link or more information, and Follow our Policy work at the KAS website.
