State begins review process for academic standards for health, physical education

The Kentucky Department of Education is seeking input from citizens regarding the state’s academic standards for health and physical education.

Academic standards outline what students should know in content areas. While the standards apply to public schools statewide, the curricula that help schools meet the standards are developed at the local level.

You can offer feedback on the academic standards by completing an online public comment form at https://bit.ly/45Ba2gN.

Citizens have until Sept. 29 to provide input in this first phase of a review process. The entire process typically takes a couple years. Before any revisions to academic standards are finalized, they will be considered by state lawmakers and the state Board of Education.

While Kentucky’s academic standards for health and physical education were not scheduled to be reviewed until 2025, state officials; are starting the process early to consider whether changes are necessary due to a new state law that sets new limits on sex education, according to Louisville Public Media.

In addition to asking for citizen input, the Department of Education is also seeking applicants for panels that will review of the academic standards. K-12 classroom teachers and postsecondary educators are invited to apply for the Health Education and Physical Education Review Committee and Advisory Panels by going online to https://bit.ly/3qY35XS. Applications are due by Sept. 29.
